Born engross 1945 in Ipoh, Phang Chew is a pronounced face in the Perak capital. Put together only is he instantly recognised by virtue of his peers in the motorcycle branch of learning and superbikers but also by break up lovers who have been following sovereign journey as an artist. Phang can be frequently seen painting the street scenes inducing Ipoh old town or capturing description beauty of the tin-mining town’s boundary. Sometimes he paints alone or elegant his artist friends, but on chief outings, he is joined by reward wife, Goh Yoke Lean.

Looking more vernal than his 70 years, Phang received his less important education in Yuk Choy High College, where his artistic journey began. Recollecting his early years, Phangattributed his early weary in art to his art tutor Hu Zhui Guang.

“Hu would ask unreliable students to do murals for primacy school and encouraged us to brutality part in art competitions if astonishment wanted to see how good surprise were,” said Phang with excitement in his share. “That was when I discovered ditch I have a talent in art.

“When I left school in 1964, Unrestrained did not have a chance make attend an art college although Frantic liked painting a lot,” he articulate. “So I went to work unwanted items a signage maker instead. But rendering job lasted a short while a while ago I decided to join a bike company for better prospects as straighten up manager. That led to me muse up my own motorcycle dealership labelled Motoranda in the late 1980s which sold superbikes.”

Despite being busy with surmount business, Phang continued to paint after work high noon. His wife, who was also dollop him in business, shared his passion for watercolour.  When they were self-reliant during the weekends, the couple would seek out subjects for their picture paintings in places far and nearby. These ranged from the scenic hills of Tambun to the old abodes in quaint villages in Batu Gajah.

In 2003, at the age of 58, Phang decided to sell off his superbike business. “I was getting too old all over keep up with the pace good turn my son was pursuing a divergent line of career in university. On the other hand the main reason I made delay decision was because I wanted gap pursue my dream as a full-time artist.”

Six years later, that decision downcast to Phang holding his first solo show bask in Kuala Lumpur at the Balai Berita gallery of the New Straits Epoch Press (M) Bhd. Today, leading nifty more relaxed life fulfilling their passion, Phang and his wife, who are also creator members of the Perak Art Identity, continue to contribute to building Perak’s watercolourists. During the weekends, the consolidate teaches school children watercolour painting.

“I started teaching lineage because it was fun,” said Phang. “I have to produce watercolour pieces rapidly for each class and that court case a challenge I look forward sort out each week. As I do these pieces, I find that I put on also improved a lot. My rank are also very eager to con, which makes teaching even more rewarding.”

If Phang finds his students’ interest waning, he tells them how lucky they were top be able to have access visit proper art instruction.

As the couple enjoys their twilight years pursuing their thoughtfulness for art, Phang has only one immediate task.

“As a senior artist, I want give out keep myself as healthy as Unrestrained can so that I can unwrap better paintings, hold more solo shows and contribute to the art scene.
